DAY ONE RIGHT

This is a phrase which is particularly active in HR circles just now.
Basically, where some employee rights and benefits currently have a qualifying period before they apply, proposed changes being considered by the government, will see those rights and benefits taking effect from an employees' very first day of employment.
This includes unfair dismissal too, where it's fully expected the current two year qualifying period, before an employee can claim unfair dismissal will be scrapped and replaced with a Day One Right.
Without any unhelpful sensationalising, if the proposed changes are passed, it will mean a seismic shift for employers. The comfort blankets and breathing space, currently provided with qualifying periods, will, in many instances, no longer exist.
This isn't meant to be a call to panic; more a heads up to be prepared by getting your procedures, policies and handbooks in place, while also training everyone who is responsible for anyone, in your organisation.
By putting things in place now, you'll have more chance of a smooth adjustment when the changes are announced.
